House is a popular style of electronic dance music that originated in the United States in the 1980s. Typical is the 4/4 rhythm usually generated by a drum computer at a tempo of around 110 to 130 beats per minute: the bass drum on every quarter note (“Four on the Floor”), snare strikes or handclaps on every second quarter note and open Hi-hats on the intermediate eighth note.
House is considered to be one of the first successful styles of electronic dance music. The style of music particularly influenced the emergence of techno and its scene. Both styles are similar and sometimes difficult to distinguish from one another, although techno generally means faster and more “machine-sounding” music than house.
